D&D for Four-Year-Olds

Note: This is another post from October. We’ve had a few more roleplaying sessions in with a friend her age, and I’ll try to write more about that soon.

In another life, on another blog site, I wrote about playing D&D with my then three-year-old nephew. He’s going to be eighteen next month. I’m old. Fortunately, I have a kid of my own now, and she’s incredibly curious about the box of books and dice and minis I pack up on my D&D nights.

I decided to let her make a character and run her through a small improvised story. She has a big imagination and answering “what do you do” came naturally to her.

Now she’s picked up her own dice from the game shop, and I’m planning a campaign for her and another of her pre-school friends with gamer parents.

I’m excited to see where this goes. I think at this point, it’s my ball to drop and I just need to be careful not to ruin the experience for her by being too strict and nerdy and unfun.
